He enjoyed the special favor of Emperor Leopold I, to whom he advanced considerable sums of money for the Great Turkish War. Prince Eugene of Savoy brought him a large number of valuable Hebrew manuscripts from Turkey, which became the nucleus of the famous David Oppenheim Library, now part of the Bodleian Library at Oxford.

Became president of the Swiss Helvetia Fund, the first mutual fund in the United States to specialize in Swiss securities. He served briefly as the secretary and chief operating officer of Christie's International, the New York auction house, before joining the Hottinger Banking Group of Paris. He was president of the arm of the bank known as the Hottinger Capital Corporation, and created and led the Swiss Helvetia Fund, which is listed on the New York Stock Exchange. 391 Apprenticed in fashion clothing and became a buyer of knitwear and children's clothing. Left for Holland in 1933 and lived in Enschede where she worked in a similar line. In 1934 she met and married a business colleague called Max Slager. He was involved in property development and investment.

In 1936 Hilde bore a son also called Max. The family wanted to move to the USA but her husband could not leave his business behind and they stayed in Holland until it was too late. Husband Max was arrested, imprisoned and died in 1941 in Mauthausen Concentration Camp.

Hilde and her 6 year old son were hidden by a nurse. The child was hidden amongst asthmatic children. The nurse was eventually found out and the children deported. Young Max was murdered in Auschwitz.

With the help of a food wholesaler, Hilde was able to escape using a false ID. She was hidden by a protestant pastor who cared for her for 3 years.

After the war, Hilde continued to run a clothing business in Holland and in due course re-acquired her home and part of her husband's business but she never recovered from the loss of her family and eventually moved to New York in the 1954 where she worked as a children's nurse. She was awarded an 'Ayshet Chaiyl' (Women of Worth) award.

392 Armin Morgenstern was born in Loštice on March 1, 1922. In 1939 he was fired from the Business College, because he was a Jew. Shortly after that he left the country. He evaded Polish police and slipped to Russia, where he became a teacher of German language. He was 17 years old. Later he joined the Czechoslovak (Svoboda) army in Russia and fought the Nazis. At that time almost 60% of this army consisted of Jewish volunteers. As a member of the air force he took part in many battles. After the war Armin safely returned home and settled in Prague. He was awarded the Order of the Red Flag, the Medal for Heroism, the Czechoslovak War Cross 1939 (twice), etc. Both Egon and Armin received the honorary medal of the town Loštice.
