417 Became a naturalised Belgian in 1845. The Wieners were a Jewish-Flemish family believed to be of Hungarian descent, of extraordinary artists and die engravers. Jacob Wiener, who generally signed his medals as Jacques Wiener, was the eldest of three brothers (the others being Leopold and Karel known as Charles), all of whom excelled in the art of medal engraving.

Jacob/Jacques undertook an apprenticeship with his Uncle, Loeb Baruch in Aix la Chapelle (Aachen) at the age of 14 years. Later he studied in Paris and then settled in Brussels. In 1845 he decided to engrave medals representing the exterior and interior of monuments with a degree of precision of details that had not yet been attempted. The first in the series was a group of ten medals, 50 mm in diameter, depicting famous Belgian churches. All but one of these medals were done in collaboration with his brother Leopold.

Jacques Wiener then undertook what was to be a series of 50 medals, each 59 mm in diameter, entitled "Medals of the Most Remarkable Edifices of Europe", to represent the principal monuments of Europe. Of these, the majority were cathedrals, churches and mosques. One was a synagogue. (Two other medals, each 40 mm in diameter also depicted synagogues). He was unable to complete the whole task as only 41 medals were issued, some of which were done in conjunction with his brother (Karel) Charles. He also engraved dies for a large number of other monuments, including prisons, town halls, the stock exchange etc. In addition to buildings, he engraved dies for individuals commemorating important events in their lives. His work was not only prodigious but was also the best rendition of perspective of the interior of buildings.

This intricate and minute work, however, was to take it toll, for by 1872 Wiener had almost completely lost his eye sight, and after 1874 he produced no more medals. His collective works have been catalogued by Emiel van Hoydonck who lists, mostly with photographs, 233 medals and 62 jetons by Jacques Wiener. The vast majority of his medals were struck in bronze, with a relatively few in silver.

Several of his medals are of Jewish interest including the 1841 opening of the Jewish old age home in The Hague and the opening of the Synagogue in Cologne in 1861.

Jacob Wiener was honoured with the "Cavalleiro da Real Ordem Militar Portuguesa de Nosso Senhor Jesus Christo" also known as the “Ordem de Christo”.

From 1879 until 1884 Jacob fulfilled the role of President of the Jewish Community in Brussels and afterwards, from 1884 until the day of his death in 1899, Jacob became President of the Israelite Central Consistory of Belgium (the central body representing all Jewish communities and organisations in Belgium - similar to the Board of Deputies of British Jews).

From http://worldupsidedown.co.nz:

Gerti was born in Montabaur, Germany, a small town of about 5,000 inhabitants. One of two siblings, Gerti had a younger brother Henry. Gerti's father was an apprentice banker who then went on to run the family store. There were about 25 to 30 Jewish families in the local community. They tended to socialise amongst themselves more than with the wider gentile population of the town. Relations within the township were for most part cordial and peaceful until the Nazi era.

"I had a very happy childhood up to 1933 (When the Nazis came to power in Germany)."

One of Gerti's first memories of the Nazis taking power was of two 'brown shirts' (Nazi stormtroopers or 'party thugs') standing in the doorway of her family shop. The following day they placed a notice in the shop window saying, 'Don't buy from this Jewish shop' ('Kauft nicht bei Juden'). As was common in those times, most Jewish parents in Germany tried to shield their children from the unpleasantness of the political situation. In Gerti's case, her parents did instruct her to tell anyone who asked which party her parents voted for to say 'Zentrum', a centrist and it was thought, non-offensive political party.

In 1935 religious tuition for Jewish children at schools was banned. Almost immediately the whole atmosphere in the school changed and former school friends ended their friendship with their Jewish fellow pupils. Non-Jewish children turned away and ignored Gerti and the other Jewish children.

"German children go on an 'Ausflug', once a year, an excursion [school trip] into the countryside and there, the Germans love to sing songs, you see. And then they could start singing the songs where they changed the words to make them anti-Jewish. So that was quite horrible really, you noticed it. It was very noticeable and people became quite nasty and it was very hurtful. It was like 'being sent to Coventry' (excluded), I mean they just didn't talk to you any more. One just took it."

"My father was a returned soldier (of the First World War) and he belonged to the returned soldiers organisation (German equivalent of the Returned Service's Association (RSA) in NZ) and various other organisations. He used to do a lot of indoor bowling and that sort of thing, which they all did; but then he was thrown out of those, you see. You can't even call it persecution, it was just a sort of separate, separateness."

With the writing on the wall, the family sold the shop and started to make plans for getting out of Germany. In 1938 they sold the house and while they were getting ready to leave, Gerti went to stay with cousins in London. The family sailed together for New Zealand, arriving on 24 August 1939. After a short stay in Wellington the family moved to Opotiki where Gerti's father setup a general store. Gerti lived most of her adult and married life in Auckland.

448 Born in Holzminden, Gerson Stern was a prolific poet and writer of some note. He lived in Kiedrich, Germany (1920 to 1937) and later moved to Jerusalem with his son Joel who also wrote poetry and sadly died in 1948 at 28 years of age. Gerson Stern's titles include Weg ohne Ende (published in Germany before WWII), Auf drei Dingen steht die Welt, (published in 2003, ISBN 3-932212-41-X) and Die Waage der Welt. The Leo Baeck Institute, in New York, holds the original of Chronik der Familie Stern aus Holzminden, written by Gerson Stern. His legacy is preserved in the Jewish National University Library in Jerusalem.

Taken from an article in the British 'Associations of Jewish Refugees Information' in July 1954 on the occasion of Gerson's 80th birthday:
"Among those German-speaking Jews ·who shared the experience of the thirties in Germany, there will be few who do not remember the tremendous emotion aroused at the very beginning of the Hitler persecutions by the publication of a novel, "Der Weg ohne Ende", by an almost unknown author, Gerson Stern, which in a short time became a Jewish best-seller. Seldom in human affairs has to such a degree the right word been spoken in the right. way. lt was a historical novel of Jewish life in Germany and Austria in the 18th century, full of fascinating and moving characters and culminating in the persecution of Jews under Maria Theresia and their expulsion from Prague. At the sanw time il was a document of Jewish faith and devotion, steadfastness of the soul in face of injustice and unexplainable suffering. This book became one of the weapons which helped the Jews to stand firm in their fight against Nazi brutality, at least on the psychological front, and to withstand with dignity and mental strength. the onslaught on their honour and on the foundations of their life. It is unforgettable."
