  • Notes
    • Meyer Feist Strauss was a survivor. He outlived two wives. He managed to serve in and return from the Napoleonic Wars where one third were killed or wounded. He made the perilous trans-Atlantic crossing to the United States in 1850 to Cleveland, Ohio (with his second wife, Johanette, and reached the extraordinary age of 100. The Strausses were one of the largest Jewish families of early Cleveland.

Born is Selters, in the Duchy of Nassau. Nassau is in the western region of modern Hesse, north of Weisbaden, Germany. Germany did not become a state until 1871. Selters became famous for its mineral spring and was a spa resort destination to take in the waters. The spring waters were shipped in ceramic crocks all over Europe and as far as America and Africa.
