Summary: Albert Stern was born on 26 March 1890, at Montabaur, Westerwaldkreis, Germany. He was the fourth of five children born to Hermann and Klara (née Simon) and was raised in a traditional Jewish Germany family. His father Hermann owned a hardware business and Albert later joined the family business. During the First World War, Stern served with the German army and saw active service in France and Romania. He married Johanna Voehl (1897-1951) and they had two children. The 1933 anti-Jewish campaigns resulted in the introduction of anti-Semitic legislation. As tensions began to rise, Stern moved his family from Montabaur to the relative safety of Berlin. On 9 November 1938, Germany moved into a radical phase of anti-Semitic activity, and the subsequent Kristallnacht (Crystal Night) resulted in the death of a number of his extended family. In the years that followed other family members were sent to concentration camps, including his sister and brother-in-law, who died at Riga, Latvia, in 1942. As the situation deteriorated the family decided to flee Germany. Stern and his daughter arrived in New Zealand, via England, in August 1939, and the family were reunited when Johanna and son arrived via Holland and Indonesia three months later. The family settled in Opotiki, where Albert owned a hardware business. After Johanna died in 1951, Stern sold his business and the family moved to Auckland. In 1953 he married Alma Heinrich (d. 1994). Albert Stern died in 1992, at the age of 102 years.
