Notes - Ernest Simson appears to have three different Hebrew names. Neither he nor his wife Elisabeth (Lisy) nee Fischer were married to anyone else and so it seems that this may have arisen as he was not an observant Jew and that he simply could not recall his Hebrew name due to infrequent use. On each occasion when a Hebrew name was required (probably as shown below), the Rabbi most probably reconsidered a likely name for him.
Ernest Simson's Hebrew names [Mordechai, Eliahu or Elisha]:
1) The Wimple (cloth binding made to swaddle a baby boy at his brit milah or circumcision and often used 13 years later at the bar mitzvah to bind the sefer torah scroll) dated 15th Iyyar 5651 or 23rd May 1891 which was beautifully hand painted for him at birth records his Hebrew name name clearly as Mordechai ben Shlomo.
(2) His Ketubah (religious marriage contract with his bride Elisabeth Fischer) dated 26th Tamuz 5683 or 10th July 1923 shows his Hebrew name as Eliahu ben Shlomo.
(3) The Ketubah dated 26th Adar 5712 or 23rd March 1952 of his only daughter (Gabrielle Simson's) marriage (to Alfred stern) shows his Hebrew name as Elisha.
Was stateless for many years living in Switzerland. Received formal Citizenship of Geneva on 3 Nov 1961.
Buried at Veyrier, Jewish cemetery for Geneva - plot No E090.
