Notes - Published research into the history of Middle Baden (Offenburg) appears to indicate that Elias Weil was an informant to one Franz Josef Haeflein who was Chairman and Privy Councillor of the Regional Parliament and a known supporter of Klemens von Metternich (born 1773 in Koblenz), who was both praised and heavily criticised for the policies he pursued as an Austrian politician and diplomat and who helped form the alliance of Austria, Great Britain, Prussia, and Russia that ultimately defeated Napoleon. Elias spent time in both prison and a work house and the research also talks of him being in debt from as early as 1816. Elias worked for his father in a dry goods and cattle dealing business and was also a teacher in Altdorf.
The Buehl Familienbuch states: Elias Weil - merchant/tradesman (1813-1815, 1817); teacher in Altdorf (1822); Elias Weil emigrated to America in 1840, funded by the Israelite community of Bühl and the treasury, yet returned a year later; in September 1851, Elias once again requested state funds to emigrate; at this time, he was being held in police custody in Pforzheim already for the third time; in a writ on 18 September 1851, the Synagogue Council of Bühl was willing to put only 50 Gulden for the emigration at the disposal of the “completely depraved, detrimental to society, and incorrigible Elias Weil”, because it was thought, that the planned emigration was only a pretext for escaping from police custody; on 9 October 1851, the government of the Mittelrheinkreis [Central Rhine Region] therefore refused to forward the request to the next higher office.
