Notes - Cautionary note from Ralph N Baer:
This entry is completely hypothetical. It looks at the possibility that the HAAS family of Ingenheim in the Pfalz (Palatinate in English) is the birth family of my ancestor Schönle Moses, the wife of Marx Nathan BAER. I state in advance that I do not have any provable information about her birth family and her place of birth. My great-great-great-grandmother Schönle Moses was born about 1773 in an unknown location and died on 1 December 1838 in Malsch, a town in the Landkreis Karlsruhe (Karlsruhe county) in Baden-Württemberg. On some records, she was also listed as using the given names Schenle,Schindel, Jeanette, and Nanette. She probably married Marx (Mordche) Nathan (22 May 1755 probably Malsch - 15 December 1838 Malsch) at about the same time which he received Schutz (right of residence and to have a family) for Malsch on 26 December 1789.An 1836 list of heads of families which is in the Malsch town archives, states that the marriage was in 1786, but this date seems quite early given Schönle’s birth year. However, as concluded later in
this appendix introduction, she also may have been born significantly earlier than 1773. I suspect that in 1836, Marx Nathan was asked how long they were married, and he said “50 years”, an approximation. 1786 would also mean that their first child was not born until eight years after the marriage took place although there could have been older children who died young who are unknown to me. Marx Nathan later adopted the family name BAER (BÄR) to comply with the Napoleonic edict for Baden of 13 January 1809 requiring Jews to assume permanent family names.
