  • Notes
    • Bert Lahr was the actor who played the cowardly lion in the movie 'The Wizard of Oz'. He played King Louis XV in DuBarry was a Lady on Broadway in 1939. He was also the inspiration for Chick Sherman's Funnyman character together with Buster Keaton. During the 1950,s Lahr and Keaton were popular faces in advertisements. Lahr championed the slogan 'Betcha can't eat just one' for Lay's Potato Chips. After the birth of a son, Lahr hired nurses to care for mother and child. His wife, Mercedes, had a mental break down and took to drinking. She was eventually committed to a sanituarium. Memories of Mercedes haunted Bert Lahr for decades and after her death he did not speak a word for three days. Died of cancer.
