  • Notes
    • He worked as a window dresser for a Jewish owned clothing store in Siegen. His best friend was an artist named Fritz Bender. He was arrested and imprisoned in Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp where he spent several weeks following Kristallnacht.

His sister, Herta Loewenstein, already in London since 1936 arranged for a Quaker friend to sponsor Hugo. He arrived in 1939, lived initially in London where he met his wife Friedel Suesskind whose family also came from Herborn. They left London during the blitz and settled in Shrewsbury where Hugo worked repairing cars but later at Corsette Slihouette as a sewing machine mechanic.
