Witnessed the horrors of Kristallnacht and its aftermath in both Montabaur where he lived and Herborn where his grandparents lived (he was at a Jewish boarding school in nearby Bad Nauheim).
A passage on the Kindertransport was arranged by his Aunt Herta Loewenstein (who was in London) and Maragaret Stern who had a friend (Mrs Schwab) who worked at Woburn House in London where the Kindertransport lists were prepared. On 21 Mar 1939, he left Germany from Hamburg on SS Manhattan arriving at Southampton on 23 Mar 1939.
He was sent to a Jewish school (Rowden Hall School in Cliftonville). His father's cousin, Dr Ernest Stern, invited him to stay at their home in Hampstead Garden Suburb.
