"The soldier Joel Stern, son of Erna and Gershon was born 12 December 1920 in the town of Kiedrich in the Rheingau Taunus region of Germany.
There he finished primary school and five years of secondary school. On 2nd March 1939 he made aliya and finished his education in Beit Hakerem School training as a teacher. He inherited the skills of a writer and poet from his father and he wrote his works in Hebrew and German. He was able to understand the soul of human being and he dedicated himself to children with special needs. He began to work with problematic children. He also taught at the Epstein Institute in Jerusalem.
He served in the Palmach for two years based in the Kibbutzim Kfar Giladi and Dafna. During the War of Independence he was attached to the Intelligence Corps based in Jerusalem.
On 26th February 1948, he visited his parents who lived near the Italian Consulate. The British guards opened fire towards anyone seen moving. A wounded person shouted for help and Joel jumped to the person's aid. He saved the individual but was caught in the fire and died from his wounds. He was buried at the Sanhedria Cemetery. Following his death, his poems were printed in a booklet in his memory. A biographic story was also uncovered.
On 13th September 1951 his remains were transferred to the Military Cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem to rest in peace."
