Notes - Apprenticed in fashion clothing and became a buyer of knitwear and children's clothing. Left for Holland in 1933 and lived in Enschede where she worked in a similar line. In 1934 she met and married a business colleague called Max Slager. He was involved in property development and investment.
In 1936 Hilde bore a son also called Max. The family wanted to move to the USA but her husband could not leave his business behind and they stayed in Holland until it was too late. Husband Max was arrested, imprisoned and died in 1941 in Mauthausen Concentration Camp.
Hilde and her 6 year old son were hidden by a nurse. The child was hidden amongst asthmatic children. The nurse was eventually found out and the children deported. Young Max was murdered in Auschwitz.
With the help of a food wholesaler, Hilde was able to escape using a false ID. She was hidden by a protestant pastor who cared for her for 3 years.
After the war, Hilde continued to run a clothing business in Holland and in due course re-acquired her home and part of her husband's business but she never recovered from the loss of her family and eventually moved to New York in the 1954 where she worked as a children's nurse. She was awarded an 'Ayshet Chaiyl' (Women of Worth) award.
