Notes - Escaped to England from Bamberg in March 1939, two months prior to his parents, in the company of the family of Ludwig Hammelburger, a cousin of George's father, Fritz. He left behind within the family home the luxuries of cook, chauffeur and house keeper and at first lived in London's poor East End with a Jewish family.
On the internment of his father, George and his mother had to leave their new home in Low Fell near Gateshead. The two of them went to Keswick in the Lake District where they lived in one room and found very basic work. Later they returned and George undertook a five year apprenticeship as an engineer, worked for a while in Gateshead and London then joining the family business, Loblite Limited, which he and his brother Ronnie (who died of Multiple Sclerosis in 1965) ran successfully.
George with his brother Ronnie and others, founded the Newcastle Reform Synagogue in 1963 and remains Honorary Life President. George served as a Justice of the Peace for over 30 years sitting in Gateshead Magistrates' Court.
In 2007 George was honoured by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with an MBE (Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) for his charitable services over many years.
George's personal testimony and biography entitled "The Boy from Bamberg" was self-published in 2014 and contains a history of his and his wife Eve's family: http://www.sternmail.co.uk/boyfrombamberg/
