[from a paper by Dr. Siegfried Rudolph of Mitwitz about Herman Freund]
Rachel de Sourdis, with a much remarkable genealogic tree. Her grandfather was born in 1821 at Bordeaux, France and came to St. Thomas, an island of the Little Antillies in the Southern Carribean. An anscestor of his it is said, was running away from the Spanish inquisition to France and adopted the name of the cardinal Francis de Sourdis of Bordeaux (1575-1626). St. Thomas had a Jewish governor in 1689 under Danish government and was settled in very early times by Jews, who were expelled from Portugal by religious fanaticism. They cultivated the island and brought the sugar-cane from Madeira. The Portuguise names of her maternal ancestors were Depas, de Castro, de Meza, Sansportia lat suppose, that she is a descendant of those early colonists.
