  • Notes
    • The marriage on 24th Jan 1913 was between Jenney Brager and her husband Fred Newby or Laurier. Fred Laurier’s parents seem to have been called John and Jane.

I assume that Fred and Jenney met professionally as they were both professionals working in Music Halls. They must have travelled around the country performing. Perhaps this is how Roy was born in Hexham.

On or about 8th Jul 1916 when Fred was 26 years and 2 months old (making his date of birth around May 1890 i.e. about 10 years younger than Jenney) he was enrolled as a Gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery. This was of course during WW1. The extensive papers confirm his marriage to Jenney and Roy is shown as his son.

On 3 Apr 1917 he received a GSW (Gun Shot Wound!) injury to his right thigh whilst serving overseas and is hospitalised for around a year. His medical records confirm his injury as 30/100 - presumably 100/100 = dead!

On 5 Mar 1917 he is reported as being absent for 5 days and then around Mar 1918 there are conflicting papers showing him as being sent to a Medical Review Board in Ripon but also 13 Feb 1918 “absent from Tatoo roll” and 11 Mar 1918 “declared a deserter” and “absent without leave leaving the unit deficient of £3. 9s. 5 3/4d.”!

There is a copy of a letter from Fred Laurier to the Royal Garrison Artillery dated 6 Jun 1920 saying he has “not yet received either gratuity or pension despite having signed a discharge in Mar 1918 under the supervision of a Captain”. He says he is “in urgent need of funds”. There are various letters from the police searching for Fred in 1920.

Fred worked for “Moss Empires” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moss_Empires) based at Effingham House, The Strand, London, as a Music Hall Artist (the same business as Jenney). This business owned the Empire and Stoll theatres throughout the UK and the business was owned by Sir Edward Moss and Sir Oswald Stoll. The same business today is callled “Really Useful Group” and is owned by Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber!
